Cape Agulhas Classic MTB

RIDE AND RUN DOWN SOUTH this Summer! An Event not to be missed, for the whole family!

Cape Agulhas Classic MTB - this is Africa's Southernmost Mountain Bike Race. The Cape Agulhas Classic MTB race has become one of the highlights of the Struisbaai and Agulhas summer holiday calendar, and after a 3-year break it is BACK! It is not hard to see why this race is on the "must do again" list of many of the previous years' race participants, and of course should be on your bucket list if you haven't done it yet!

“We like to think that we offer something a little more personal at our events. We don’t focus purely on the top racing aspects, but rather focus on the whole field and getting as many people across the line as possible.” ~ Graham Bird, Mountain Runner Events

On Friday, 23 December 2022, you can participate once again in the Cape Agulhas Classic MTB. The race was designed to test your skills and stamina, while simultaneously rewarding you with spectacular ocean and mountain views of the Cape Agulhas region.

Africa’s southern-most mountain bike race takes its name from its location: Cape Agulhas is the official meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. An area renowned for its wealth of fynbos species, pristine beaches, and rolling ocean currents, beneath which lie the wrecks of countless ships, it’s an idyllic holiday and residential destination just two hour’s drive from Cape Town.

The main mountain bike race on Friday morning is 62km, testing the skill and stamina of the rider. Then there is the scenic 45km route and the slightly downscaled 33km ride, as well as a 12km event to enjoy at your leisure.

Saturday morning, 24 December, will have a 15km, 10km and 6km Trail Runs.

Mountain Bike Race ~ Friday, 23 December 2022 ~ 63km | 45km | 33km | 12km
Trail Run ~ Saturday, 24 December ~ 15km | 10km | 6km

This year, Mountain Runner Events are the organisers and well known in this arena. They host a number of outdoor events throughout South Africa, focusing on getting people OUTSIDE.

Graham 'Tweet’ Bird, owner of Mountain Runner Events, started mountain biking and trail running in the early 2000s and did his first adventure race in 2004, and has travelled to many international adventure races as part of the Merrell Adventure Addicts team. Competing hasn’t always been his focus though.

“Sport has been a major part of my life from my teenage years and I’ve always been involved somehow in the admin and organising side as well as competing. The opportunity to start organising events on a more professional basis presented itself in 2011 and it has just grown from there.”

Tweet gets a kick out of both aspects of the sport: competing and organising. Sharing the outdoors drives him to conceptualise and manage unique events, introducing people to his playground in the process. “For me the biggest reward is see everyday people getting outside and enjoying the outdoors. Seeing people push past their comfort zones, whether it is doing their first 5km or finishing the Whale of Trail in 11 hours.”

On a personal level, competing in endurance events is a constant reminder to Tweet of his capabilities. “Endurance events make me feel alive and show me that anything is possible,” he says. “I’ve come to learn that if you just take one step at a time, everything becomes possible.” It also affords him endless opportunities to spend time in his happy place – the outdoors. “Being able to get away from the modern technology and how it rules our lives, to just be outside and enjoy the simplicity of nature, it’s refreshing for the mind, body and soul.”

Graham (Tweet) Bird runs a tight ship, and having a long-standing history in sport and outdoor adventure means any event he is involved with will be worth adding to your race calendar!
